This special edition release of “Straight Into Darkness” features never before seen film of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the recording studio. Adria Petty and director Alan Michael Bibby invited FX WRX to create analog motion graphic animation and optical effects for the video, 80's style.

Cinematographer / VFX Artist Christopher Webb and his team built a streak photography animation camera system with a movable projection screen. This allowed them to capture in-camera animation FX and practical motion graphics. The illustrator Blaze provided hand-drawn artwork as the starting place for this process.

Chris and his team also set up dimensional black light sculptures and filmed motion control camera moves flying through the glowing environments. The archival 16mm footage was projected onto textured surfaces and re-photographed through optical effects and kaleidoscopic prisms.

Exploring in-camera effects like these are at the core of what FX WRX does best. Putting this magic to work for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was truly "runnin' down a dream". ​​​​​
