THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME

Miniature Cloudscapes

VFX Supervisor Dan Schrecker and Production Designer Adam Stockhausen came to FX WRX to create miniature cloudscapes for Wes Anderson's THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME. Motion tests were used to determine the best materials and methods for these shots. The team then designed and built a host of practical clouds, each with an internal framework, mounting rods, and openings for lighting effects.

The clouds were arranged in various cloudscapes and filmed with the in-house motion control crane, The Black Widow. This allowed multiple passes to be captured with different lighting effects. The finished shots were displayed as live backgrounds with the film's cast performing in a full size airplane cabin and cockpit sets.
